Creative Arts welcomes new faculty
Seven assistant professors joined the College of Creative Arts this fall, with wide-ranging expertise in painting, dance, gaming, screenwriting and graphic design.
Art Department
Susan Belau teaches printmaking, print workshop and monoprinting. In creating her prints and mixed media works on panel, she draws from observation, traces, re-traces, edits and reassembles these drawings. Out of this process springs the conceptual basis for the work: the experience of time, imperfections in observation, and the shifts in recording as stories are told and re-told. Belau has new works on display in the 2008 SF State Art Department Faculty Exhibition, through Nov. 8. She earned her M.F.A. in printmaking from University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
Danielle Mysliwiec teaches drawing, color workshop and painting. Her paintings are manifestations of her desire for order, indulging in systematic painting processes that guarantee beauty, control and power while simultaneously denying the realization of perfect systems. Mysliwiec also has works on display at the Art Department Faculty Exhibition. She earned her M.F.A. in painting and digital arts from Hunter College.
Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department
Elaine Chan teaches research and social aspects of electronic media. Her research interests are in new media and communication technologies, video game playing and competence motivation, social contexts of media use, media entertainment and well-being. She earned her Ph.D in communications from the University of Southern California.
Cinema Department
Julian Hoxter teaches screenwriting. His recent work includes collaborations that have led to two fine art shows and a short documentary project working with heroin addicts. He co-wrote the 2004 feature film "Kiss Me Again," starring Jeremy London, Elisa Donovan and Darrell Hammond. Hoxter earned his M.A. in film studies from University of East Anglia.
Design and Industry Department
Stephen Jones teaches visual communication design, including graphic design, typography and computer graphic imaging. A longtime SF State instructor, Jones is an award-winning designer and artist as well as co-principal of Plantain Studio. His interests focus on African American history and icons, and their representations in mass media and culture. Recently, he was named one of 25 U.S. designers to be featured in the AIGA Design Journeys archive and exhibition. Jones earned his M.F.A. in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design.
Joshua Singer teaches design process and graphic design. His design company AtomTan produces media for Web, print, video and motion graphics. He has published articles in the magazines Orange Juice and CMYK. Singer earned his M.F.A. in process driven design from California College of the Arts.
School of Music and Dance
